Matteo Gallo Stampino successfully discussed his Ph.D.-dissertation in September 2023. The Ph.D. was carried out as part of a cotutorship between the universities of Bergamo (Italy) and Gießen (Germany) and had as its research object the influence of Alfred Döblin's novel Berge Meere und Giganten (1924) on 21st-century German climate-fiction. Before that, he graduated in European and Extraeuropean Languages and Literatures (German and Scandinavian Literature) at the University of Milan with a thesis on contrastive translation applied to the first part of Goethe's Faust. Other research interests include polyphonic literature, Scandinavian contemporary literature, ecofascism, and Food Studies.
Dr. Gallo Stampino is a visiting scholar at MESH and the Department of English from February to September 2025 and will conduct research on "eco-engaged popular literature", asking how climate fiction can contribute to sustainability transformations.
